Orange County Utilities continuously works to improve solid waste management to better serve our community. A significant construction project is currently underway at the Orange County Landfill, which involves installing a highly effective liner that is 50 times thicker than a garbage bag over 60 acres of the landfill.
The installation work will occur in six phases through October 2028. During each phase, the sod and cover soils will be stripped from approximately 10 acres at a time and may require existing garbage to be uncovered temporarily during the day. This may create temporary odors. At the end of each workday, six inches of soil will be applied over the exposed area, consistent with environmental regulations. The work may also require the landfill gas collection system to be shut off for limited periods of time - only when necessary. While the work is being completed, our teams of skilled engineers and technicians will assure all work complies with environmental regulations.
We appreciate the community's patience during this necessary project, which will strengthen the overall effectiveness of the gas collection system at the landfill. Please report any odors using this formulario so our team can be aware of any off-site impacts and adjust activities, if necessary.
